Visas 

Delegates who will be attending the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (WCAR), and who are subject to South African visa control, must apply for visas at any South African mission abroad. Those passport holders, who do not have South African representation in their country of origin, must apply at their nearest or most conveniently situated South African mission.

 

Requirements

The South African Department of Home Affairs requires that the visa label must be affixed into the passport. The physical passport, the visa application form (BI-84E), two ID photos and the letter of invitation must be submitted at the missions concerned for consideration.

 

How to apply

The applicant or a contact person may approach the South African mission directly. The applicant may also use courier services or travel agents to forward the application to the mission.

Who is subject to South African visa control

Visas are not required by citizens of the following countries for the periods and subject to the conditions indicated. The exemptions pertain to ordinary, diplomatic and official passport holders. Official visits (on invitation of the South African Government) and accreditation for holders of diplomatic and official passport holders are not dealt with in this schedule.

  1. Holders of South African passports, travel documents and documents for travel purposes.

  2. Holders of passports of:

    The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland including the British Islands Bailiwick of Guernsey and Jersey, Isle of Mann and Virgin Islands as well as the Republic of Ireland are totally exempt from South African visa control and thus do not require visas for any purpose regulated by visas.

    Please note: Nationals of the British Dependent Territories are subject to visa control. The Territories are: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn, Henderson, Cucie and Oeno Islands, the Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Turks and Caicos Islands.

  3. Holders of passports of the following countries in respect of bona fide holiday and business visits only (period unspecified) and transits:

    Australia Greece Norway
    Austria Iceland Portugal
    Belgium Italy Spain
    Canada Japan Sweden
    Denmark Liechtenstein Switzerland
    Finland Luxemburg United States of America
    France Netherlands (Kingdom of the)
    Germany New Zealand
  4. NOTE:
    An unspecified exemption implies that, in practice, a temporary residence permit for longer than a period of 90 days may be issued on arrival, as long as the visit is of a bona fide nature.

  5. Holders of passports of the following countries in respect of bona fide holiday and business visits not exceeding 90 days and transits:

    Argentina Jamaica St Vincent & the Grenadines
    Brazil Malta Swaziland
    Chile Paraguay Uruguay
    Ecuador San Marino Venezuela
    Israel St Helena
      
  6. Holders of passports of the following countries in respect of bona fide holiday and business visits not exceeding 30 days and transits:

    Antigua & Barbuda Hungary*** Singapore
    Barbados Jordan Slovak Republic
    Belize Lesotho South Korea
    Benin Macau**** Thailand
    Bolivia Malawi Turkey
    Botswana Malaysia Zambia
    Cape Verde Maldives Zimbabwe (Government Officials, including police on cross border investigation)
    Costa Rica Mauritius
    Cyprus** Mexico
    Gabon Namibia
    Guyana Peru
    Hong Kong* Seychelles
      
  7. This exemption is only with regard to holders of Hong Kong British National - Overseas (BNO) passports, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passports and Hong Kong Certificates of Identity.
    **  Diplomatic and official passport holders visiting the RSA for holiday purposes are exempt for 90 days in terms of the visa agreement.
    *** Diplomatic and official passport holders visiting the RSA for holiday purposes are exempt for 120 days in terms of the visa agreement.
    **** This exemption is only with regard to holders of Macau Special Administrative Region passports (MSAR)
      
  8. Agreements have also been concluded with the following countries for holders of diplomatic and official passports and will enjoy visa exemption for holiday and transits only, for the period indicated below: 

    Czech Republic 90   days
    Egypt 30 days
    Malta 90 days
    Morocco 30 days
    Poland 90 days
    Romania 90 days
    Slovenia 120 days
    Tunisia 30 days
      
  1. These arrangements are not applicable to individuals whose visa exemptions have been withdrawn.  In all cases, the normal entry requirements must still be complied with before admission into the RSA is gained.

  2. Visas are not issued at South African ports of entry and airline officials are obliged to insist on visas, if required, before allowing passengers to board.
