Information Technology Services

Background

A network, consisting of approximately 10 kilometres of CAT5 cable, fibre links, dedicated datalines to the Internet, switched technology and good backbone, will be installed to provide an Information Technology service.

Media Services

50 workstations with Microsoft Office 97 running on Microsoft NT4 Workstation will be deployed in the bullpen area. 10 Hewlett Packard 4100 laser printers will be placed strategically.

Delegates’ Services

10 workstations with Microsoft Office 97 running on Microsoft NT4 Workstation will be deployed in the bullpen area. There will also be 2 strategically placed Hewlett Packard 4100 laser printers.

All of above workstations will provide the following functionality:

  • word processing in Word
  • spreadsheets in Excel
  • presentations with PowerPoint
  • sending and receiving of internal mail with Exchange
  • sending and receiving of Internet mail with Exchange
  • browsing on the Internet with Explorer

Support Personnel will be on duty to assist with any problems that may arise. Uniform clothing will identify these personnel.

Deployment

The workstations are Pentium III 800 Mhz processors supported by 256 Mb of RAM. All PCs are linked to a centrally managed server providing all the services.

Servers provide all background services. Redundancy is provided in several ways to ensure a true 100% uptime of all services.

Constant network monitoring will be done with various network tools to ensure good communication with the rest of the world.

Planning

All of the above were only possible with our mission statement:

To contribute positively to a successful WCAR 2001 in Durban by providing a professional, efficient and reliable Information Technology infrastructure and service.

This was accomplished through:

  • proper planning
  • extensive consultation with all people / areas involved
  • timeous procurement / obtaining of equipment
  • extensive set-up and testing
  • professional set-up in Durban
  • hard work from a dedicated IT team

The Directorate of Information Technology of the Department of Foreign Affairs of South Africa is proud to be associated with the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia And Related Intolerance.

Any comments, suggestions or queries may be sent to Ben Pieterse, Area Co-ordinator for Information Technology at wcar.it@foreign.gov.za.
