Health
The National Department of Health will be responsible for
the coordination of medical facilities during the World Conference Against Racism, Racial
Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance. It will be assisted by the South
African Military Health Services and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, Ambulance and
Emergency Medical Services.
The South African Government will ensure that adequate
medical services are provided for all delegates. Primary health care and emergency medical
services provided at the conference venues will be free of charge, but should a delegate
require treatment at a hospital, or need to be admitted to a hospital, the cost thereof
will be borne by the delegate. The South African Government will, however, provide medical
travel insurance for Heads of State/Government and their spouses.
In addition to the medical facilities
provided at the conference venues, the following medical services will be provided during
the event:
Hotels accommodating Heads of
State/Government will have medical facilities on site, operated on a 24-hour basis
Certain hospitals will be designated and
prepared for use by delegates
Emergency Medical Services will deploy
additional resources during the event
Disaster contingency plans for hotels,
airports, hospitals and conference venues will be reviewed
INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE (ICC)
A medical centre will be established in Room 12 on the
ground floor, south side, with the entrance leading off the main concourse. The centre
will be clearly marked as such, with directional signs erected at various sites about the
ICC.
The centre will be in operation 24 hours a day from 30
August to 12 September.
The medical centre will consist of three facilities, namely
a VIP medical post, a general medical post and a resuscitation area. A rear door will lead
out to the ambulance parking bay.
DISASTER MANAGEMENT
For the duration of the Conference, the Durban Metro
Disaster Management Centre will be activated and staffed with personnel from all related
disciplines. The Centre will be responsible for ensuring that disaster contingency plans
are in place and that all relevant services are in a state of readiness in case a disaster
situation occurs.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Delegates who are from yellow fever
areas are also advised that it is an entry requirement of South Africa that such people
provide proof of inoculation against yellow fever.
